Potchefstroom - A mother is mourning the death of her son after he was hit in a car accident involving Kaizer Mohau, controversial spokesperson for the mayor.
Mohau is due to appear in court on Tuesday after the death of the teenage boy. Mohau allegedly was driving a city council vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
Mohau, who was driving a Ford Icon that apparently is owned by Tlokwe Council, is alleged to have struck 14-year-old John Madekane late on Sunday afternoon while he was driving in Sarafina Street, Ikageng.
The boy died from his injuries later in the evening in Potchefstroom Hospital.
Mohau, who is accused regularly by opposition parties of making "mischievous" statements, was arrested at the accident.
He initially was accused of drunken driving and reckless and/or negligent driving, but after the boy's death the charges were changed to drunken driving and culpable homicide.
The police released him on R500 bail after taking blood samples.
Fransiena Madekane, the boy's mother told Beeld she was so shocked when she arrived at the hospital and saw her boy's feet "that I just collapsed. They were very swollen. He was filthy.
Heart is really aching
"It is not good for my heart, that my child is no longer with us."
She described her son, the second eldest of five children, as "a good boy".
"You know, he didn't roam around at night. He didn't get up to no good and he always listened to me. He was one of my best children.
"From when he was tiny I referred to him as 'Son' and he called me 'Didi'. My heart is really aching. I'll never see my child again."
During the interview with Beeld, Madekane waited "for that man who drove over my child and killed him, because he said he wanted to talk to us and help us".
