Durban - A Gauteng man - who was on holiday in the St Lucia area - drowned at the weekend, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the man, Hank Roberts, was with his family on St Lucia Beach on Saturday when he decided to go for a swim.

"He disappeared under the water and his body was later recovered," said Mdletshe.

Police confirmed that last week another woman had drowned at the same beach.

"In both cases, no lifeguards were on duty because they are on strike," Mdletshe said.
