There is nothing wrong with voluntary separation as long as it isn't hurting anybody, and forcing otherwise is against the principles of freedom that people died for. I recall that during national service (yep..that makes me white and in my forties) the riflemen would be instructed to prepare a warm bath for the officers during training in the field. It was given that whichever disgruntled conscript was left to oversee this would urinate in the bath. You can imagine the opportunities for surreptitious expression of your opinion of the system/ leader elements and fellow soldiers which kitchen duty afforded. I would like to know why UFS still had separate residences for different races up until last year? Did they not get the news in 1994? As for "forced integration", is the opposite not "forced separation" and an equal violation of choice? This is both a human rights issue, and a labour issue - these women were employees who likely feared losing their jobs if they refused to "participate". We expect university students to possess some level of critical reasoning that helps them to cope with both the injustices of the present, as well as of the past. I studied at UFS in 1994 - 1997. The university had an 'unwritten' rule to make some residences black and other white. I heard stories of ladies that were not allowed in a residence, even if they had family already living there. We complained about it, but gradually some residences were filled with only black students and other with only white students. Studens adapted to this wrong doing of the university. Perhaps universities should consider some form of initial screening of potential students PRIOR to admitting them as students. I attended Rhodes Universtity pre-1994 and we were integrated in the residences with black and white side by side. I never saw anything like this in all my days at varsity in the 1980's.
