Pretoria - Three months after two of his family members were gunned down by robbers scarcely a block from his home in Erasmia, a Pretoria man has suffered a similar fate.
Yusuf Gani, 26, is in critical condition in the Unitas hospital in Centurion, after being shot in his wrist and upper body.
Farouk Janoo said on Tuesday that his nephew Gani, and Yasin Aboo, 26, a friend, were standing chatting outside Gani's house in Barbara Coetzer street at about 20:00 on Monday night.
Three men had meanwhile climbed over a high, electrified wall on his property.
"The domestic saw them and ran to call Yusuf," Janoo said.
"The men chased after her. They held up Yusuf, Yassin, the domestic and another domestic worker. Then they took Yusuf's remote control and opened the gate.
"Another three men in a Toyota Yaris arrived in the yard."
"Everyone went into the house. The men tied up the domestic workers, held Yasin down on the floor and took Yusuf himself through the house while they ransacked it."
"The robbers demanded more money from Yusuf. He could give them nothing. I think they became frustrated and just shot him," Yusuf said.
The robbers fled with a TV set and DVD player, amongst other things.
Janoo's uncle Moosa Janoo, 67, his cousins, Ali, 17, and Akhter, 24, and their brother-in-law Mohammed Lambad, 28, were overwhelmed and shot by six armed robbers while at home in Bart Joubert street in Erasmia last year. The house was a block away from Gani's own place.
Ali Janoo and Lambad died in the incident.
Farouk Janoo said he did not think his family was being targeted.
"But everyone in my family has been touched by crime," he said.
"And yet I don't have the feeling that I'll be next. It's just (random) crime. It's getting really bad."
"I want to get out of here."
Superintendent Faan Steynberg, station commander of Erasmia police station, said it was part of the inquiry to investigate a possible link between the two incidents.
