What nonsense 28/02/2008 01:03
How could any serious thinking person construe that such action by these students was play acting? Such indignity against one person is an attach on the dignity of us all. The University must draw a line which protects the human dignity and human rights of all persons. - Mark, Australia |

Double Standards 28/02/2008 01:16
Look, if these guys produced an obviously racist video I say throw the book at them... but, where do we draw the line. In a democratic state there should be a healthy dose of freedom of speech... no matter how stupid or insensitive that speech is.... especially if the speech is used as part of open discussion and or education. I'm not saying I agree with these guys... but if we throw the book at them we need to slam Zuma for his rascist sing-a-longs and his black only party (apartheid the sequel) - Clint |

We did we go wrong 28/02/2008 04:09
It is sad to see how these students in their final year at varsity that they still know nothing about basic good manners and common decency. They are clueless of how to treat fellow human beings. What type of future leaders is this varsity breeding. - Brandon |

The more things change the more they stay the same 28/02/2008 06:54
These assholes have destroyed what little credibility afrikaners have left. Having been one of those being oppressed by afrikaners, I have forgiven them as I could not go on with my life if i did not. This incident however reminds one that until you really commit yourself to being a compassionate human being, respecting one another it will only be lip service. These boys must be made an example of. This is the only way the future will be better for all of us. - Evan Hannie |

I don't believe it 28/02/2008 07:16
I don't believe they were just play acting. This is just a cop out and they should be punished for what they did. I wonder if they saw that poor woman on TV crying her eyes out after she found out what they had done. My heart was breaking for them. It's disgusting! Shame on you for treating people so badly. - Charlie |

There is a right way 28/02/2008 07:28
There is a correct way of dealing with this. As a white Afrikaans guy let me firstly state that this incident absolutely disgusts me. Bring them to court and have them answer to both criminal and civil claims. But afford them their rights to legal representation and a fair and unbias trail like we do all who are criminaly charged. But show restraint in protest of this action. More barbaric acts like assaulting other inocent students and destroying property destroys the credibility of your outrage - aj |

Media blowing things out of proportion, as usual 28/02/2008 07:31
This clip was just released to fuel race tension. I watched it and I couldn't see what the big deal was. Personally I think anyone stupid enough to go for a "fear factor" type thing deserve what they get. - Jane |

Doesn't look racist to me 28/02/2008 07:31
In the couple of years I worked as a waiter and this type of interaction was common between us and the kitchen staff. We would joke about "whites only" areas, and they would joke about killing all the whiteys. Someone would ask to see a lady's pass-book, and she would counter that the whities must now carry pass-books. It was mere horseplay, a way of bonding with, and getting to know your colleagues. We shared jokes over a cigarette and a glass of coke after work, no-one felt demeaned in any way. - Die Skim |

..sanity prevails 28/02/2008 07:41
Pleased to hear that some cool legal heads can put this thing in perspective; a counter balance for the national hysteria of our leaders, feeding the anger of the uneducated masses, is necessary. Let them go back to running the country. There is enough material there to make an even more shocking film. - Benzo |

Campus video 28/02/2008 07:46
I have to agree with the accused that one must wonder if this is a diversion tactic to distract attention from the damages caused by students. Seems if some groups do something it is swept under the carpet and when others do soemthing it leads to protest marches??? - Natasha |

Idiots 28/02/2008 07:53
As a white Afrikaans male I have to say that those guys are a bunch of idiotic fools of lesser intelligence who should not be allowed to even further their tertiary studies as they would not be an asset to this wonderful country. At best they should clean prison toilets as it would seem that they have a twisted toilet sense of humor. Fools like themselves make it difficult for me because now I'm seen as a racist pig because I'm Afrikaans. Bloody idiots. - D Howell |

Squeeze them slowly, raping, murdering them one by one, until 90% is on board to Perth. - simunye grooves" Unquote. Kollapen 100% Correct 28/02/2008 08:10
"Nelson Mandela reached out too far with reconciliation when he took power in 1994.
SA Human Rights Commission chairperson Jody Kollapen reportedly told a conference at the University of the Western Cape that the former president unintentionally contributed to divisions in the country."
Kollapen is 100% correct, I always maintained that it is because of that legacy that blacks are still deprived of many privileges that whites are still enjoying in this country - Zinzisile |

This is blown out of proportion... 28/02/2008 08:21
Firstly, I have seen the video, and I do condemn it. But to prosecute them criminally. That is ridiculous. I didnt see any of these staff members object to making this video. They were all laughing and having what seemed to me a big jol. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am sure the students even thanked them afterwards with a bottle of whiskey which they gladley accepted. I think it was a bad attempt at bad humor. Let the boys do a public apology and get on with studying. - Skiballas |

what say ye? 28/02/2008 08:24
Rather than pull this out of proportion I would suggest they interview the staff involved to determine what actually happened. If this was a homemade funny movie surely the staff involved would vouch for that, if not nail the students to the floor. For goodness sake stop pulling everything out of proportion. The solution is simple. - japie botha |

It took us back 28/02/2008 08:25
Everytime when things like happen it takes us back in year of apartheid. The cause more upset is that this are young children who supposed not to have being involved. Stop generalising!!! 28/02/2008 08:30
All white people are NOT like that. I am a white, middle class Afrikaans girl, and I found what those students did sick & disturbing.
But now there's this racial uproar, with (black) people brandishing signs like "stop the white arrogance". That's like saying ALL BLACKS are hijackers. PLEASE people. Stop GENERALISING?!?!?! - M Snyman |

disgrace 28/02/2008 08:32

Charity begins at home 28/02/2008 08:35
What those students did to those workers is in-excuseable but what the authorities should be concern with is the source of such radical behaviour. Sometimes what you teach or speak,in front of your children, at home it is very likely that your children will take it seriously and put it in to practise. It is unbelieveable that in this day and age there are those who still have such behavior and this is the sort of thing that is taking us back-ward rather than forward. - Ncedo Kemele |

Disgusting! 28/02/2008 08:36
I saw the video briefly last night and I was so disgusted by it that it reminded me of that incident where white policemen set dogs on defenseless black men in the bush, I just hope that if these students are guilty they'll be dealt with accordingly and fast before this incident causes more division and violence amongst black and white students around the country. - Mduduzi Ngxekisa |

Really Sad 28/02/2008 08:36
I think the responsibility lies with the parents of these students. If you've been taught from an early age that a black person's life is less than yours, it will be manifested in events like these.Anyone denying that this was a racist act, has no place in the new south africa.Although there is an auguement for the students that the victims were willing partisipants, as true as that may be, no one can condone urinating on a "human being's" food.that is barbaric and inhumane - The prophet |

Where are the cleaners. 28/02/2008 08:46
Everybody agrees that what happened isnt right, and no person can approve of what happened. BUT, I think there is much more behind the story than the media lets on. And why did the video surface only now? And why didnt the "too traumatised" cleaners complain earlier? Where are they now? I get the feeling that there are facts and things that are being covered up.

Amazing.... 28/02/2008 08:48
From the reaction in our country and abroad I thought the nation was standing in unity against this barbaric and rascist behaviour. Its sad that this lawyers are condoning this act and try to justify this video.I thought that the boys would have shown remorse, apologised to heal the wounds of their black victims.Rascists never apologise we have seen it with some whites refusing to even acknowledge the past let alone apologising for apartheid.Take them to a prison and they will meet their match. - Tso |

Racism in UFS is alive. 28/02/2008 08:55
I completed my first degree with UFS sometime ago and this is not a shock to me. I was staying in the resident next to Reitz and it was a living hell to be next to that racist residence. We have complained to management before about racism and i am afraid we are still going to complain. I am even not proud to be associated with that institution anymore. - Phokele Maponya |

Sick minds 28/02/2008 09:01
A persons upbringing tends to manifest itself at a later stage in life. How long will this be allowed to continue. There is absolutely no justification for such barbaric acts. The justification has always been that its all because of forced integration. My argument is that why should white students be allowed to have their own island within an intergrated institution. What makes special? If integration doesnt happen then there is no choice but to force it. Sies man. h - MaFel |

I don't see how feeding urinated food can be play-acting. This just goes to show that we are going backwards. The racism problem is still rife and is still being taught and rooted to white kids from an early age by white parents who are still in denial. Play-acting my foot. Voetsek! - S E M |

These Students are not very bright. AT a place of learning where they are supposed to take charge of the rest of their lives, this is not a good start.

Its not a race issue 28/02/2008 09:55
I also find this totally disgusting but the part that concerns me even more is that the media is harping on the fact they they are white (all media all channels) yet when other criminals rape, pillage and kill we never hear mention of race (supposedly cause its not relevant). Yes this was disgusting and should never have happened what does the fact they happened to be white have to do with anything and why keep on mentioning it. Make it fair and start stating the race of all criminals. - Concerned |
