Johannesburg - A policeman was seriously wounded following a shootout with robbers who had just bombed an FNB ATM in Brackendowns Alberton on Friday, East Rand police said.
The incident occurred at about 04:00.
Captain Steady Nawa said the robbers, armed with AK47s, managed to take the ATM safe.
"At about 04:00, five officers at the Bracken City Shopping Complex heard a loud bang in the mall. They went to investigate and on their way they were shot at by 12 robbers," Nawa said.
He said one police officer was hit in the mouth and leg but was in a stable condition in an undisclosed hospital.
The robbers fled the scene in three BMWs.
The robbers had earlier held a Fidelity guard hostage and robbed him of his firearm.
