Durban - A 21-year-old woman was gang-raped in a dense sugercane plantation in Durban's Hillcrest suburb while her father was held at gunpoint nearby, police said on Monday.

Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said the incident took place on Sunday when the father and daughter went fishing at a small dam in Hillcrest, behind the Polo Pony premises.

"The two were fishing when they were approached by seven armed men," said Veldhuizen.

Two men held the man at gunpoint while the remaining five dragged the daughter into the plantation where she was gang-raped.

Veldhuizen said the suspects took jewellery and fled in the man's car.

She said police recovered the stolen car in the same plantation on Monday.

"We are presently at the crime scene and are now searching for the suspects", she said.
