UFS protesters in court
05/03/2008 13:33 - (SA)
Bloemfontein - Twenty-eight students from the University of the Free State appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for contravening a court order prohibiting protests on campus.
The matter was postponed to April 3 for further investigation.
The students were released on a warning.
The group were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly contravening a court interdict after disrupting classes.
In terms of the interdict, no students may intervene with the academic programme of other students.
Tension on the Bloemfontein campus has been high since last month after students started protesting against the implementation the university's diversity programme.
Since then a racist video made by white students has also surfaced which added fuel to the situation.
ANC spokesperson in the Free State, Qondile Khedama, who attended the court proceedings, said that the ANC would commence with a full-scale strike at the UFS if matters were not improved.
Khedama said the ANC would wait for the recommendations of internal processes in terms of the racist video before action would be taken.
