Durban - Durban's Mangosuthu University of Technology would close at noon on Friday following a week of student protests.
A pamphlet distributed at the institution and signed by the vice chancellor and principal Aaron Ndlovu said this was due to disturbances caused by Sadesmo (South African Democratic Student Movement).
All students were ordered to leave the premises as well as vacate the institution's residences and the notice said that any student found on the institution's premises after midday would be arrested and charged with trespassing.
All registration that had been taking place was cancelled and new students would have to submit fresh applications.
"The date for reopening the university will be announced at a later stage," he said.
A group of about 200 students sang and toyi-toyied outside the university entrance on Friday morning.
At least 125 students were arrested during protests at the institution on Thursday.
The Sadesmo-led Students Representative Council had refused to negotiate with the management until those arrested had been released.
The students are protesting against the dismissal of three SRC members, poor bus services and an apparent shortage of lecturers.
Several others were injured during Thursday's protests, including Inkatha Freedom Party Youth Brigade leader Patricia Lebenya.
The protests began on Tuesday with management saying they had not been aware of the students' complaints until the protests started.
