White River - A young man who was caught trying to burgle a house was beaten and stoned to death on Sunday morning.

The man, who was armed with a pistol, was caught inside the house in Zwelisha, near White River in Mpumalanga, at about 01:00.

"When police arrived at the scene they came across an angry mob of people and a man lying dead with stones all around him and a pistol next to his body," said KaNyamazane police spokesperson Constable Chico Nkosi.

He said the community accused the dead man of kicking open the kitchen door to enter the house while the owner was sleeping.

The owner woke up and called her neighbours for help.

"She told us that her neighbours responded quickly and found the suspect still inside the house. His accomplice fled the scene," said Nkosi.

The slain burglar appears to be about 22-years-old and was wearing denim trousers, a denim jacket and brown Paulo Falcon sandals.

Anyone who can identify him is asked to call Superintendent Hlatshwayo on 082 469 1478.
