Johannesburg - Metro police saved three men from certain death at the hands of an angry mob near Diepsloot, Johannesburg metro police said on Tuesday.
Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said metro officers rescued the men from an angry crowd of taxi drivers and commuters who caught them stealing mag-wheels off an Opel vehicle.
The Opel was broken down on the R511 near Diepsloot. The owner of the Opel was inside a taxi, which was driving past when he saw the three stealing his mag-wheels.
By the time Metro officers arrived on the scene the three had been stripped naked and had been beaten so severely that they were only semi-conscious.
They were taken to Tembisa Hospital in a serious condition.
Police would only open a case once the men had recovered, said Minnaar.
