Stellenbosch - A student from the University of Cape Town may have suffered permanent damage to his hearing after a police officer allegedly hit him repeatedly against the left ear during a drug raid on Saturday morning.
Andre Bergh, a third-year student, was on the dance floor at about 02:00 when the police entered the Springbok Pub in Stellenbosch.
"We were told to sit down on the floor. One police member acted very aggressively towards the students. He hit some of them with his rifle and pushed them onto the floor," Bergh said on Wednesday.
After several failed efforts to find out the name of the police member, Bergh walked to the man and asked his name.
"He started hitting me. I told him: 'Hit me again.' He then hit me five or six times on the left ear with his flat hand."
Bergh again asked his name, upon which the policeman said: "p...".
According to Bergh he visited an ear specialist on Monday after he could not hear a thing in his left ear for more than a day. "Initially I hoped it would get better by itself."
"According to the specialist there is a hole in my eardrum. I don't know yet if there will be permanent damage. I underwent tests, but have not received any feedback from the doctor."
