Johannesburg - There are no added benefits for people who have to work when two public holidays fall on the same day.
Both Good Friday and Human Rights Day will be celebrated on Friday March 21 this year.
Professor Hugo Pienaar, an expert in labour law from Pienaar Swart and Nkaiseng Advocates, explained on Sunday that there was not an additional day in the year.
"Thus people cannot be paid for an additional day."
Pienaar said that the law did not make provision for the unusual situation of two public holidays falling on one day, but that "the law also does not have the purpose of overcompensating people".
"People who work on the 21st were entitled to double pay according to law," Pienaar said.
They were not entitled to double-double pay.
There were also rumours that Thursday March 20 would be declared a public holiday.
Advocate Deon Erasmus from the legal service at the Department of Home Affairs said that March 20 will definitely not be a public holiday.
According to Pienaar the employer and employee could come to an agreement to decide about compensation and additional holidays before March 21.
