18/03/2008 13:20 - (SA)
Durban - At least three protesting students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pietermaritzburg campus were injured after being struck by rubber bullets on Tuesday.
Although police have confirmed that rubber bullets were used, the institution's Student Representative Council (SRC) president Mabandla Ndlangamandla said the three students were shot with real bullets.
Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said officers used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd at 10:00.
"We have not yet confirmed how many were struck by the bullets but no one was hospitalised," she said.
Police arrested 18 protesting students for participation in an unlawful gathering and for disrupting traffic flow on Alan Paton Road.
Ndlangamandla in a statement said: "Three students have been shot and 15 were arrested without any warning shots".
He was not immediately available for further comment.
