Johannesburg - Atteridgeville police are trying to establish who is responsible for the death of a 20-year-old during a recent clash, which may have been sparked by xenophobia, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Captain Thomas Mufamadi said a number of people were arrested on Tuesday for public violence in Atteridgeville West when a fight broke out between a group of South Africans and foreigners, and the foreigners' home-based businesses were vandalised and items stolen.

The South African youth was found dead afterwards and police were still trying to establish how he died.

A group of foreigners sought refuge at the police station on Tuesday night and had returned to their homes on Wednesday.

Police were keeping the situation "cool" he said.

He earlier attributed the clash to xenophobia but later said that although this possibility formed part of the investigation, it had not yet been confirmed.
