Cape Town - The bodies of two women have been recovered after their car was flattened when a truck overturned on the N1 early on Wednesday morning.

Cape Town Traffic Services spokesperson, Searle Johannes said that the women were fatally injured after the container the truck was carrying flattened their station wagon.

Rescue workers initially could not tell what was under the container as it had crushed the vehicle - a beige Toyota Cressida.

The N1 was closed for hours while rescuers worked to get the container upright. The truck took the slipway from the M5 to N1 too fast at about 06:15 and overturned.

The driver had minor injuries to his left arm.

Police were on scene investigating the case.

Motorists on their way to work via the N1 were stuck in traffic for hours and Johannes said the highway would be closed for a further hour and a half.

Alternative routes were congested, according to motorists.
