May 2 holiday still uncertain
19/03/2008 14:11 - (SA)
Cape Town - The Presidency had not made a decision by Wednesday on whether May 2 should be a public holiday.
"There is still a consultation process under way and government will make an announcement once a decision has been made," presidential spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said on Wednesday.
Earlier this week, media reported that President Thabo Mbeki would not declare this Thursday a public holiday - despite calls from Cosatu and Fedusa - but would instead give South Africans a day off on May 2.
Union leaders called for an additional day off because Human Rights Day and Good Friday fall on the same day (March 21).
Ratshitanga could not say when government was likely to make the announcement.
"It should be finalised in due course," he said.
