ANCYL rejects Eskom hike bid
20/03/2008 09:29 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League rejected "with contempt" Eskom's application for a 53% tariff hike.
"We must guide against subsidisation of incompetence and lack of visionary management which has caused so much disruptions in our lives," a statement released on Thursday said.
"South Africa has enough capacity to generate energy including electricity. We call on the ANC to defend the poor in particular, as this will affect adversely their livelihood."
On Tuesday, the National Electricity Regulator of SA announced that the power utility had officially applied for the increase.
Eskom was granted permission for a 14.2% increase in December last year.
Eskom said it needed the figure to be revised because of "increased primary energy costs" and "accelerated demand side management" costs.
