Johannesburg - Four people died after a taxi minibus collided with a car on the N4 between Belfast and Wonderfontein on Sunday, said Mpumalanga police.

Captain Klaas Maloka said the taxi, occupied by 16 people, was moving in the direction of Wonderfontein about 10:00 when the left rear tyre burst and the driver lost control over the vehicle.

The taxi swerved into the lane of oncoming traffic and collided with an approaching car.

Four people died on the scene, including the driver of the car, and 13 were injured, of whom 11 severely. The 11 were hospitalised.

Maloka said traffic was slow on the N4 due to the accident, but the road had been cleared around 11:30.
