  • Johannesburg - A car belonging to the Lesedi Municipal Manager in Ratanda location, Heidleburg was burnt in the early hours of Wednesday morning, following a protest, Johannesburg police said.

"He (the councillor) saw his car that was parked at his house go up in flames while he was inside his house at about 02:00 on Wednesday," said Captain Julia Claasen.

"The bakkie that was parked nearby did not catch alight."

Claasen said the burning of the car took place after a dispute with municipal workers who were striking for salary increases on Tuesday afternoon at about 14:00.

"Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) people were trying to burn the (local) library and threw rubbish all over the municipality property," said Captain Thivhulawi Tshilite.

Police are investigating a case of arson and no arrests have been made.

"More police have been placed in the Lesedi area and are on alert," said Claasen.
