Steelpoort - A student police constable was killed on Thursday morning by an armed gang of ATM robbers here.

Student constable Marcus Malesela Letwaba, 24, was shot several times by a 14-member gang at the Steelpoort shopping complex in Mpumalanga about 02:30.

He died at Dilokong Hospital while his colleague, who had been on patrol with him, Inspector Mphoisane Martin Ratchoshi, was unhurt.

Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the gang bombed two Standard Bank ATMs in the shopping centre after shooting the constable.

They fled in a bakkie and four cars with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The getaway vehicles were a Toyota Hilux bakkie, and four cars, a Volvo, Opel Corsa, Citi Golf and a Toyota Corolla. The gang is still at large.

Died in the line of duty

Police have opened a murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition docket.

"We won't rest until the case is finalised. We want to make sure that those involved are arrested and face the whole might of the law," said Ramatseba.

He extended condolences to the student constable's family and friends, saying he was a martyr who died in the line of duty.

Anyone with information about the murder can contact Captain Mohale at Burgersfort police station on 083 686 3385 or 013 231 7231.
