ANCYL members 'disciplined'
29/03/2008 13:15 - (SA)
Johannesburg - High levels of discipline displayed by members of the ANCYL in handling leadership issues, as the 23rd national conference approaches, were encouraging, the organisation said on Friday.
Addressing the media regarding the preparations for the conference, ANC Youth League's general-secretary Sihle Zikalala said contrary to reports, there was no conflict within the organisation
Zikalala said the conference - with more than 4 000 expected delegates - was not a summit of provinces, but was about individual delegates.
Voting for the new ANCYL president was expected to take place on April 04, a day after the conference convened. Zikalala said the League was politically and organisationally ready.
"We hope the nominations will take place on April 03."
Northern Cape 'also due to meet'
An election agency and an independent body to run nominations and elections of the new leadership had been appointed.
"The agency will provide technical assistance and the Electoral Commission will provide oversight," said Zikalala.
He said almost all nine provinces would have convened their provincial congresses when the national caucus rallied next week, with the Eastern Cape meeting over the weekend.
Moreover, North West and the Northern Cape were also due to meet for their general council.
The national conference themed - "Youth in action, to advance youth development towards 2012" - would take place at Mangaung in Bloemfontein.
Zikalala said discussion documents had been sent out to structures as a guide to contemporary challenges facing SA youth and the League itself.
Zikalala said the conference would be attended by international guests representing "fraternal parties" across the globe.
ANC president Jacob Zuma would deliver a keynote address on the first day of the conference, said Zikalala.
