Johannesburg - A man died and another was severely injured in a fire inside a dwelling in the informal settlement of Diepsloot on Saturday, Gauteng police said.

Constable Patricia Simelani said a resident of the extension seven settlement heard screams about 04:00 and went out to see what was happening.

A dwelling was on fire and two men were inside. Neighbouring residents tried to extinguish the flames with water.

Emergency services later airlifted the severely injured man to Johannesburg Hospital. More than 100% of his body was burnt, Simelani said.

The injured man told emergency services he and his friend had been drinking the night before and his friend had smoked a cigarette.

Simelani said the cigarette could have been the cause of the fire.
