04/04/2008 12:24 - (SA)
Durban - A hand was found on Thursday on Durban's Dakota Beach and police on Friday began investigating if someone had drowned or had been killed by a shark.
Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said the hand was found by beach cleaners on Thursday at 15:30.
"We don't know what happened. We are investigating all possibilities," she said.
The hand - which had rings on it - was partly decomposed and police were unable to tell if it was that of a woman or a man.
The race of the person was also unclear.
Police said no other body parts were found yet.
"We are urging people with missing family members to contact Inspector Roshan Beharilall of the Isipingo police station on 082 411 6351 immediately," said Veldhuizen.
