ANCYL to focus on racism, unity
05/04/2008 08:43 - (SA)
Bloemfontein - Unity and racism are two of the main issues to be discussed on Friday by delegates to the ANC Youth League's (ANCYL) national congress in Bloemfontein.
The battle to eradicate "the demon" of racism in society was never more relevant than now, said ANCYL spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.
"The president's political report set the scene for the robust engagement that will be taking place in commissions later today (Friday)."
Unity and cohesion in the ANCYL was also vital for the African National Congress as a whole, Kodwa said.
Other issues to be discussed in the closed sessions included economic transformation, black economic empowerment, a media appeal tribunal and membership issues.
ANCYL delegates slowly filled the Callie Human Centre at the University of the Free State on Friday morning for the second day of the conference before the programme started at about noon.
Kodwa said although the programme was running more than four hours late, this was not a problem as the conference was expected to continue into the early hours of Saturday.
The conference on Friday was again marked by intense lobbying by supporters of two candidates for outgoing league president Fikele Mbalula's post - Saki Mofokeng, Free State NEC member, and Julius Malema, Limpopo provincial secretary.
The groups, organised in their provincial sectors, have since Thursday tried to out-sing and out-dance one another inside and outside the Callie Human Centre at every opportunity.
The performances are enhanced by the use of vuvuzela's and drums.
Election of the new leadership was expected to start on Friday.
