14 hurt as bakkie overturns
07/04/2008 10:06 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Fourteen people, many of them sitting at the back of a bakkie, were injured when the vehicle overturned in Houghton Estate on Monday morning, paramedics said.
"It is understood that most of the workers were sitting on the back of the bakkie when it overturned, throwing them off the vehicle into the road," said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.
The accident took place on the corner of Monroe street and Houghton drive.
He said paramedics found the occupants "scattered on the scene" with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said it was not illegal to transport workers on the back of a bakkie, but the driver was expected to be cautious.
In this case, a charge of reckless or negligent driving would be investigated against the driver.
