Johannesburg - A man suspected to be involved in ATM bombings was arrested on Tuesday, police said.

Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the police stopped a blue VW Golf in Alexandra, Johannesburg on a routine check.

The driver of the car then tried to bribe the police with a R20 note.

The police officer attempted to arrest him but was bitten on his left hand, and the man fled.

Minnaar said two other men in the vehicle ran off.

"The officers gave chase and caught up with the driver and arrested him," Minnaar said.

The police found an empty FNB ATM box and an unlicensed firearm in the car.

The man was expected to appear in the Johannesburg's Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, police said.

Police were continuing to search for the man's accomplices.
