Stellenbosch - If it hadn't been for a five-year-old bottle of KWV brandy standing on the kitchen counter, burglars would have got away with even more loot from Koos Kombuis's house.
It was presumably this bottle of brandy in Koos's house in Somerset West that caused three burglars, who had already carried valuable possessions out into the garden and filled their bags with other household items, to stay on longer than they had initially planned.
Koos said the burglars thoroughly enjoyed themselves drinking his brandy and probably forgot for a bit just why exactly they were really in the house.
They presumably got a huge fright when the alarm went off.
Forgotten were the flatscreen TVs, the laptops and the digital cameras, the security company discovered when they arrived at the house.
The Somerset West police also arrived within minutes.
"The burglars luckily left all the valuable items in the garden and ran away only with the bags".
According to Koos the value of the stolen goods was about R5 000.
"I'm annoyed but if it hadn't been for the KWV, the damage would have been much bigger," Koos said.
He was in Jeffrey's Bay (as part of his tour in the eastern and southern Cape to promote his new album, Bloedrivier when the burglary happened and the people who were looking after the house were still at work at the time.
The burglars had climbed over the wall and removed the glass pane from the window of one of the rooms to gain access to the house.
"It must have been people who knew what they were doing because our dog didn't even do anything to them," Koos said.
A security guard was patrolling the house after the burglary and saw the thugs coming back for their loot.
"They had the audacity to come by the house later that night to see if the items were still lying in the garden," Koos said.
According to him no one had been arrested yet.
