Robots fail, cause crash
09/04/2008 11:23  - (SA)

  • Families still wait for bodies
  • 10 die in Cape crash
  • 14 hurt as bakkie overturns
  • Johannesburg - A 45-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after being involved in an accident with a bakkie on Wednesday in Boksburg, police said.

"The 45-year-old man was driving a green Renault along Trichardt Road and he was crossing over the R554 when he collided with a white Ford bakkie.

"The bakkie was driven by a 36-year-old man," said police spokesperson Inspector Jimmy Maboko.

The cars collided at about 06:30 and "the driver of Renault was trapped inside and had to be extracted using the Jaws of Life and was airlifted to Alberton Union hospital in a critical condition."

A witness at the scene said that the traffic lights were not working when the accident occurred.

The bakkie driver sustained minor injuries and was attended to at the scene by paramedics.

Police have warned motorists to treat any traffic lights that are out of order as stop signs - as "we are continuously experiencing load-shedding."

A case of reckless or negligent driving has been registered with the Dawn Park police.
