Rapist dad abandons bail
11/04/2008 21:06 - (SA)
Cape Town - A paroled rapist Rashaad Kruger, who was alleged to have slit his own daughter's throat, on Friday abandoned an application for bail when he made his second appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court.
A small but vociferous group of protesters chanted in the street outside the court building, demanding that Kruger, 41, remain in custody.
Kruger had recently been paroled after serving 10 out of 15 years for the rape of his older daughter.
Family friend Basil Lee, a City of Cape Town councillor for Ward 67, where the Kruger family lives, told reporters that social workers had persuaded Kruger's wife to accept him back into their home and to give him another chance on his release from prison.
It is alleged that he soon afterwards attempted to rape another young girl and that his younger daughter witnessed the attempt.
It is alleged that Kruger slit the younger girl's throat when he realised that she had seen his attempt to rape the other girl.
On Friday, Kruger was represented by legal aid attorney Liezel Zeeman who told magistrate Hafeeza Mohamed that he had abandoned his bail application.
At Kruger's first court appearance on March 25 he was remanded to April 11 specifically for the bail application.
At Friday's proceedings prosecutor Nina Meyer said the investigation was not yet completed.
At her request, Kruger's case was remanded to July 23.
