go go go go we are jsut fine 11/04/2008 12:04
The racist just deserve what he got. He seems to think like someone that has platinum blood and no sense of respect for black people. Sunday Times has done one good thing in many years by firing this racist. We are happy and at least I will but the paper this week for doing something that i ahve thought about for the past 18 months - sandile |

Boycott this ANC Rag... Boycot the ANC Bootlickers 11/04/2008 12:11
I have decided to boycott the rag. Similar to how the ANC wants a media tribunal? Maybe Mondli is a deployed ANC Cadre? The Zimbabweanization of this country gathers pace...Restrictions on freedom of speech are the canary in the coal mine of tyranny and oppression. Everyone must be allowed to say what they think even if it is perceived as anti-black. Much anti-white rhetoric is encouraged and condoned from blacks. CNN, BBC and AlJazeera is now my media. Who needs SA print media anyway! - Alan |

David Bullard 11/04/2008 12:13
David Bullard wrote a feisty column, full of poisened arrows mostly aimed at the ANC and it's supporters. Tragic thing is, he never quite applied himself as vigourously when faced with issues from the white side of things. I do not know if he is or isnt a racist, that is for those who know him up close to tell.
However, talented as he may be and he is, he personifies a journalism that chose to view complex issues down a narrow tunnel, forgetting the virtues of objectivity in the process. - Ken |

The editor approves the content 11/04/2008 12:13
This is absurd. Editors are there for a reason. They make sure the content is up to scratch. Mondli really looks like an idiot now. His statement regarding "the column was not in accordance with the constitution" is exactly why David Bullard has been able to write about what he has in the 1st place. It (the constitution) protects the freedom of speech he has enjoyed. If I were David I would sue cause this case is a laywer's dream (never mind trhe publicity, winning is very likely) - Primate |

Racists will always find Racist issues. 11/04/2008 12:15
In the "NEW" RSA, the less intelligent and previously disadvantaged people WILL alway find Racist "undertones". When will the citizens of this nation find common ground and resolve differences? In my view it will take 2 to 3 generations, BUT ONLY IF GENERAL POPulation change their attitudes. True, sensation sels publications, but why , oh why must the RACE card continue to be used. UNITE and Accept freedom of speach and DIVERSITY! - Matrix |

Fire the Editor!! 11/04/2008 12:23
It seems like the only man that did not do his job was the editor. Let them fire him!!! Oh but he is black...where will they find a suitable replacement to comply with BEE ??? - BlackSam |

bravery 11/04/2008 12:24
tell mr bullard that the sunday times is now an afocentric newspaper and its a surprise he lasted as long as he did.the great rainbow nation at the beginning of 1994 is turning into a nation that is determined to dumb down and thats the way this nation is now heading. we embrase DUMMING DOWN, starting with lack of electricity and the disinterest to read and be educated.there is no longer a high road that i can see.sorry for mr bullard . - emanuel |

Unbelievable 11/04/2008 12:24
I used to buy Sunday Times religously for Out To Lunch until Bullard came along then gradually bought it less and less until I stopped. Not a fan but SA has lost its sense of humour and its tolerance to any view other than a black Africanist one of course with the exception of tolerance for a white apologist one. Personally I'm gatvol with the narrow mindedness and duplicity. - Coconut |

Not racist 11/04/2008 12:28
Funny enough, but after having read the article, I dont find it racist.
Its just observing what life in SA would have been like if the white man didnt come here. - Werner |

I apreciate yo news all the time, its so informative.I'm fortunate to able to browse to it all the.Keep up the good work.
Re:Bullards dismissal!
I just find out from your news bulletine about Mr Bullards end of career with Sunday times.I believe it was racist remark he made,I'm sensitive because it patronise on non-whites.I'm not angry with his remarks as they were personal but realisticly, its impossible and we would have been better without whites in Africa as they spoiled the broth.

David Bullard 11/04/2008 12:32
The out to lunch column is a highlight of my Sunday. Bullard intends to shock people and maybe ruffle a few feathers. It's the fact that there is always an element of truth in what he says combined with the 'racist' manner in which he says it that really ruffles feathers. I am just surprised that he denies being racist, he must be the only person on the planet who isn't. - Grant Edwards |

Will Miss You 11/04/2008 12:34
We will miss David Bullard at our house. He was the only read that was worthwhile in the Sunday Times. There are a legion of fans who agree with what he had to say about current affairs, politicians and the Government.
He is far better then that racist John Qwalane. - Bullard Fan |

Who is the real bad guy? 11/04/2008 12:38
South Africa's obession with seeing all in a racial mattter will be the reason the contry perished. I am black, an did not find the article racist or offensive but rather entertainning. Sure the points were brought in a controversial manner but they are true. The goverment seems to want to blame whites whilist they have been in power for 13 years. So who the real bad guy here? - Young Black |

Bullards view 11/04/2008 12:39
I agree wholeheartdly with David Bullard. Thanks Makhanya I'll be saving R11.00 a Sunday from now on. The last few years have seen The Times go backwards and biased towards the ANC - Hector King |

I will never Buy Sunday Times again!!! 11/04/2008 12:39
I don't find the article Racist at all - even a Black Caller called in to 702 this morning saying he agreed that Europeans did improve Africa and he could see the difference in other African Countries and local hospitals.
I don't think the column is racist or warrants a sacking!
I will NEVER buy another Sunday Times ,.... ever !!!
And I also feel that he has written more controversial pieces in the past....worse than this supposed Racist piece. - Russel |

Uncolonised Africa 11/04/2008 12:39
Though I never read the Bullard article, purely the phrase that says 'uncolonised Africa does not know what its missing' is very naive. Look at the state of Africa, then you would know that had the 'colonialist' adopted at least some sort of fair trade agreements then Africa would have been really empowered and uplifted to which Africans could have shown great appreciation for. But they did not do that, they pillaged and oppressed and left an awful legacy of which Africa could really done without - sonny |

David's firing 11/04/2008 12:41
David, I always turned to your column the first thing when I bought the Sunday Times. You have always told it like it is, with acerbic wit and humour. You aren't racist, just like so many of us, sick of the double standards of the ANC and many of its followers. How far we have fallen from Nelson Mandela's standards. I now have no further reason to buy the Sunday Times. It has mostly degenerated into facile drivel. - Doug |

Bullard 11/04/2008 12:41
Not only are you a racist, but you also are insubordinate to Blacks. Your claim that the Paper is no longer what is used to begs a question of "under whom". Perhaps it was good when it was led by Whites. Join ff or AWB if you want to be political. dont hide behind journalism, because you have flouted every journalism ethic. - Kingzile |

Bit late now 11/04/2008 12:41
It's a bit late now on both sides. I read the column and though Bullard was being a prat and it could well be described as racist. But then I assume the job of an editor or his cohorts would be to weadle that sort of stuff out. - roy |

Absurd.... an understatement 11/04/2008 12:42
If the editor of the paper thought that the column was racist, which it is not - He was in the position not to publish it! We cannot as Africans continue to blame our colonialist past for our present shortcomings. We lack good leadership, and Bullards axing has obviously been spearheaded from outside of the paper. Why would Mondli Makhanya have published if at the time he believed that the column was racist?? - Nelesh |
|
 |
| |
mmmmh suspect 11/04/2008 12:42
While Makhanya was not available to respond he has called the column "extremely racist" and "not in accordance with the character and values of the Sunday Times". SO THEN WHY PUBLISH IT... methinks bullard may be right they published it so as to make a good excuse later to fire him on grounds of racism... for his other comments on the paper in his Empire interview. - j |

Here we go again 11/04/2008 12:43

David Bullard. 11/04/2008 12:44
David, i read your column and couldnt agree more..... Its just typical of the new wannabe eurocentric blacks in this country to fire one when u are pointing out the obvious and to then play the hollow backed race card as usual........
Its is well know secret in the world of politics that when u shake the hand of a black politician you had better be aware that his other hand is inj your pocket fishing for hand outs.....why?? Cos they are black and the whole world owes them something..... - Ian |

Unbelievable 11/04/2008 12:46
I gradually stopped buying Sunday Times long ago. I used to buy it for Out To Lunch until Bullard took over. However it seems to me we have lost our sense of humour or tolerance for any debate unless it is a populist black Africanist one or a white apologist one. My brothers I'm getting gatvol with the duplicity. A Black Journalists Forum, a Jon Qwelani and his derogatory statements are tolerated. DOF! - Coconut |

Racist? 11/04/2008 12:46
I read the column, there was nothing racist about it. More to the point Dave Bullard stopped being funny after he got attacked and shot. I feel sorry for the guy. Instead of a brilliant funny column he just became another whiney white. - Tom |

 |
| |
Inappropriate 11/04/2008 12:46
That article is definitely inappropriate and the editor should be sacked for permitting it to be published in the first place. David Bullard does come across as a spoilt white brat and the fact that he penned such an article in the first place, no matter what his "brief" raises questions as to his personal and journalistic judgement and integrity. - GBO |

Bullard 11/04/2008 12:49
Bullard has been sacked, Glory Hallelujah. the guy is no shock jock; he's just a jerk and a racist jackass Now he's gone into denial regarding the racist garbage he has been pumping out. Just more proof that his brain went OUT TO LUNCH years ago and never got back. Good riddance. - S'khandamayezi |

Firing Bullard 11/04/2008 12:50
There's far more to the cancellation of Bullard's contract with the ST then Mondli Makhanya let's on. David was right when he mentioned that the standard was dropping since Mondli Makhanya became editor. His accusation of David Bullard being racist is the joke of the year, and is of course the trend in this country. When he is he going to fire Khumalo for his out and out racist views?? Never, of course, as he is black. No more ST for me on Sundays. It's too expensive anyway. - Robert Kay |
