David Bullard 'wasn't joking'
11/04/2008 15:33  - (SA)

  • Bulllard 'a scapegoat'
  • I'm no racist, says Bullard
  • Bullard 'went too far'
  • Sunday Times fires Bullard
  • Verashni Pillay

Johannesburg - Sunday Times editor, Mondli Makhanya, said on Friday his decision to fire longtime columnist David Bullard because of an allegedly racist column was his decision alone and not a political move.

Makhanya, who has been editor of the Sunday Times for the past four years, responded to claims by Bullard in a News24 interview that he was being punished for pointing out the deficiencies of the newspaper in an article for Empire magazine in February.

"It had nothing to do with the Empire article whatsoever," Makhanya told News24. "It was about views that were incongruent with the values of the Sunday Times and were incongruent with the values of South Africa."

The column, titled Uncolonised Africa wouldn't know what it was missing, described what South Africa would have looked like had the "evil white man" not come "to disturb the rustic idyll of the early black settlers".

    'Extreme 19th century racism'

Despite Bullard emphasising that he was not racist, Makhanya said the column reeked of "extreme 19th century racism".

"I will not allow such myopic 19th century views in this newspaper," he said.

But Bullard told News24 that the entire column was fictional and not reflective of his views at all. "It's a column. If I believed all the things I wrote in those columns I must be a very, very strange person."

Bullard maintained he was following the same established formula for the column as he has in the past.

"They asked me to write a column to be controversial and to attract readers to the paper and then they suddenly decide that they don't like that formula because it suits them. They want to get rid of me because I've actually been very critical of Avusa and it's management," said Bullard.

But Makhanya said he did not mind criticism and that the decision was based solely on Bullard's views.

However Makhanya conceded that the Sunday Times had "messed up" by allowing the column to be published in the first place. "At some point the system should have picked it up and it shouldn't have gone into the paper," he said. "I take the blame for that."

    Notorious

Bullard has written for the Sunday Times for 14 years. His popular column, Out to lunch is notorious for its satirical and scathing treatment of political figures and others.

But Makhanya insisted that while he had hoped the piece was satirical he realised after speaking with Bullard that the columnist was serious.

Bullard said he was not and that his brief for the column was to be controversial and a "shock jock".

While Makhanya agreed, he said Bullard had gone too far this time and crossed the line.

"It's a very tough decision for an editor to lose a popular columnist so that decision was not easy and I did not take it lightly.

Someone is trying to cover his own arse
    11/04/2008 16:32
This isn't yet another oh-so-sensitive race issue. If Makhanya thought it was that bad, he shouldn't have let it go through in the first place. Or shall we explain what it is that an editor is supposed to do. But he let it get published. And when he realised that maybe he'd made a mistake, he turns around and points fingers, plays the handy race card, and gets Bullard to take the blame. First its our politicians that avoid responsibility. Now its our editors. Or is there a link here? - Lynne

      Double Standards
    11/04/2008 16:34
Here we go again: Jon Qwelane can scribe the most blatant racial articles and nothing gets done. Why? Because he is black. This country will never get over itself until standards are applied equally to everyone. Its getting more like Zimbabwe every day...... - Gestapo

      ahhh
    11/04/2008 16:35
should the editor not be fired for allowing this column in the first place, then deciding its not up to standard kinda smacks of incompetence. - iceCreamMan

      David Bullard
    11/04/2008 16:44
I have always espoused the definition of racism that one finds so eloquently expressed in the Encyclopaedia Britannica where it says: ?Racism is the idea or theory that there is a causal link between inherited physical traits and certain traits of personality, intellect, or culture and, combined with it, the notion that some races are inherently superior to others.? Now it seems to mean that if a black is in any manner insulted by a white, then the white is a racist. Rubbish! - Aripho Tah

      Absolute Rubbish
    11/04/2008 16:49
Well like the 'out to lunch' comment - I think the City Press or Rapport (and I am a soutie) are better options ... BOYCOTT the Sunday Times - Mary

Stephen Mulholland must be laughing out loud in wilderness
    11/04/2008 16:51
I must also hasten to say that Bullard's (new-found) racial prejudice - which he misguidedly denies even on evidence to the contrary - started showing even way before the attack he and his family endured during a robbery in his house, and has come to augment the very racially driven prejudicial stance that had characterised Mulholland's endless swansong on Sunday Times, which Bullard, in his greeting shot following Mulholland's departure, purported to abhor. How the chickens have come to roost!! - nzs

      1 Question
    11/04/2008 16:52
Would someone care to explain how the editor of the Sunday Times allowed this article to be published in the first instance? I have a good friend who works in the same industry and I am often told how ?P.C.? they need to be. How every article is scrutinised to try and ensure that no language is used that could be construed as ?offensive?. Granted not each and every article can be vetted, but surely a column as popular as this is would be glanced over at the very least. - Joe Public

      QUE???
    11/04/2008 16:53
I just read the column and huh??!! If thats classified as extreme racism then surely mister JQ and his coconut story is borderline xenophobic and incites genocidal extremism (and for those who don't understand sarcasm, it does not) The whole point is Bullard and good old JQ are paid to make crazy comments and to incite the general ire of Joe public. It's called ratings people, and now we fire him. OMG!!! we are turning into England with a PC obsessiveness - aelric

    11/04/2008 16:53
Dear Mr. Editor, I am a very good columnist. I write about how to darn socks and also carrot soup recipes. Any chance of me taking over Mr.Bullard's column? - Hans

He was playing in the traffic
    11/04/2008 16:56
I used to really enjoy the column but lately I feel that Out to lunch has become a soap box for David B to stand on and spout his vitriol. And his subject matter has been in something of a rut in the recent past. There is a VERY fine line between controversial and crossing the line into racism/slander/whatever. I did feel that David had gone too far at stages recently. But I will miss his column. He is good and often brings a chuckle. - Scott

I totally disagree with some of the things he said such as: ? ...this undisturbed South Africa...? - nonsense. There would definitely have been many incidents of donkeyjacking, election rigging and hut looting. - Uma

Stephen Mulholland must be laughing out loud in wilderness
    11/04/2008 16:58
We now have to believe that the ever-ignorant, and white-pleasing Mondli Makhanya has finally woken up to the realisation that there is (and had been) and lot of racist drivel propelled by many other columnists at Sunday Times under his (supposed) watch! What a load of bulldust! While many argue that Makhanya should shoulder responsibility for the racist drivel we were subjected to last week (quite a valid point), it's intriguing to note that he now is a bad guy because he's fired a white... - nzs

      Racism
    11/04/2008 16:59
Everything in our country is always based on the colour of your skin. this is a new South Africa , which means racism should be a thing of the past. Racism is NOT only a South African problem its a world problem. If South Africans dont stand together for what is right we will become a Zimbabwe, the people with money will leave and the poor will be left in civil war and famine. - Outta Here

I really wish those displacing their anger at Makhanya would stop subscribing to (and buying) the Sunday Times for a while, so that Makhanya could remove the cloud in his eyes when the same fate that befell Mathatha Tsedu (loss of paper sales, leading to dismissal as editor) comes knocking on his door. Maybe then he'll realise he's all along been ingratiating himself with the racist section of South Africa, as "editor" of Sunday Times. Brace yourself, Makhanya. Dismissal is imminent..... - nzs

This newspaper depend on its readers. This issue sound very personal to me. I will not buy this paper again and I urge people that feels the same to follow me in this. Come to think of it, I wonder how long Makhanya worked for this paper...? Is it longer than 14 years? Makes you think. - Star

      Another eclipse!
    11/04/2008 17:09
David, let us know who your next employer is to be! You were the one guaranteed smile on a Sunday morning when I searched the Times for something positive to read. No doubt Mr Makhanya will do the honourable thing and resign for not pulling the article prior to publication. But I would not bank on it... - Terry Newman

    11/04/2008 17:12
What a shame to lose one of the most entertaining columns in the Sunday Times! I especially enjoyed that specific column for it's tongue-in-cheek humour. I always respected Mondli Makhanya but not anymore. In this country what's good for the goose is definitely not good for the gander. - Des

Have Sunday Crimes editor lost his sense of humor?
    11/04/2008 17:14
With all respect - has the Editor of Sunday Times really lost his sense of humor? The dismissal of David Bullard is extremely disappointing - a talented and humorous writer, who can only be a racist in the eyes of real racists. He has brightened up the world of many readers of Sunday Times, and just as many of your black contributors take a swipe on the white population, so should Bullard be able to take a swipe on the black population, especially when done with such distinguished humor. - Holger Jensen

      Erring Erudite Editor Irks
    11/04/2008 17:15
My alliteration is as bad as your editing, Mr Makhanya, what are you smoking? It is your responsibility to EDIT, get it? Your lack of diligence in doing your job has come back to bite you in the bum, but instead of resigning, you BLAME BULLARD. Shame on you. I don't think Bullard's column was so bad, as to warrant being fired. I don't think his column was good either, but that's what a controversial columnist does: create controversy. Good grief, next thing we'll just have blank white pages. - AJAY

      Incompetence
    11/04/2008 17:19
If Mondli made a mistake then he must take the fall and resign not fire Bullard. Anyway...he is right about ancestor worship - Simpiwe

I agree with Bevan. Good bye to the Sunday Times with an autocrat like Makhanya at the helm. In future I will see the front page on the internet, just to make sure that I am not missing some controversy. What are the Bullards.. I mean bets on this weekend's front page contents? - WF
