3yrs house arrest for metro cop
16/04/2008 12:04 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A corrupt metro police officer was sentenced to three years of house arrest on Tuesday, after taking R240 from a driver who opened his wallet to retrieve his licence, Johannesburg metro police said.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said Freddy Manganyi was found guilty of corruption by the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.
"The motorist opened his wallet to take or remove his driver's licence but the corrupt officer grabbed the money instead," he said.
Manganyi was sentenced to three years of house arrest and rehabilitation treatment, and he will not be allowed to consume alcohol during that period.
Minnaar said metro police director of operations, David Tembe, warned that corrupt officers would not be tolerated and urged the community to report them to the metro police's 24-hour hotline.
