Calm after xenophobia clash
16/04/2008 13:09 - (SA)
Pretoria - Calm has been restored to Phomolong in Mamelodi East after residents attacked foreigners living the area, Pretoria police said on Wednesday.
"Today, (Wednesday) is calm but the police from the crime combating unit and Mamelodi's crime prevention unit are monitoring the situation," said Inspector Sipho Mabena.
This came after residents looted spaza shops and burnt shacks belonging to foreigners in the area on Tuesday.
"Twenty-one people were arrested, four of them face malicious damage to property charges while the other 16 face public violence charges," said Mabena.
The foreigners are Zimbabweans and Mozambicans.
On Monday, residents also attacked the nationals.
"I cannot confirm as to how many people were injured in both incidents," he said.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson William Baloyi said: "The reports of injuries are unconfirmed at the moment."
