18/04/2008 10:25 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A policeman thwarted the attempt of three men to hijack his car in Booysens, Gauteng police said on Friday.
Police spokesperson Captain William Mpondo said three men approached a plainclothes police detective in an unmarked police car in Kenilworth on Thursday evening.
One of the men produced a firearm and demanded the keys to the car which was parked next to a church at the time.
The policeman gave him the keys.
He then went into the car and started the engine.
The policeman then took out his own firearm and fired at the suspect, hitting him in the leg.
He then arrested the man for attempted car hijacking.
He is currently in hospital under police guard and will appear in court when he has recovered.
