Teachers stage stayaway
18/04/2008 14:00 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Alexandra teachers did not arrive for work on Friday in support of 48 teachers who had been refused entry to their school earlier in the week, the SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) said.
"There is not a single teacher at school in the whole of Alexandra," said Sadtu spokesperson Ronald Nyathi.
He said the teachers were staging a stayaway in protest against community members refusing entry to all 48 teachers at Kwabhekilanga Secondary School in East Bank.
"Certain community members locked out teachers on Monday. They said they were underperforming and hence they are not wanted," said Nyathi.
He said the community was demanding that all 48 teachers at the school be dismissed.
Sadtu was in negotiations and the situation was at a "crucial" stage, Nyathi said.
