'Taliep knew he was to die'
18/04/2008 14:01 - (SA)
Cape Town - A confession by one of the alleged hitmen in the Taliep Petersen murder trial, describing his final moments, was admitted unopposed as evidence in the Cape High court on Friday.
In it Jefferson Snyders said he could see in Petersen's face that he knew he was going to die.
However Snyders claimed he did not know who actually pulled the trigger because he was out of the house at the time.
The surprise admission came after Snyders' advocate Roelf Konstable told the court earlier this week that the State's bid to hand in the confession would be opposed.
Konstable told judge Siraj Desai on Friday morning however that his client had instructed him that he no longer opposed the admission of the document.
In the confession Snyders said he worked with accused three, Waheed Hassen and on December 16 2006 Hassen told him "Man, we have a job to do".
He did not ask what sort of job it was.
They went to Taliep's Athlone home where they found the front gate and front door opened.
They saw Taliep watching television and Snyders told him to keep quiet.
"I told him we were only coming to do a robbery," he said.
He said Taliep's wife Najwa, who is also on trial, told them repeatedly "He must be shot".
Snyders said he left the house and was in the bakkie that they came in when he heard a shot.
"I do not know who shot him that night. I left those two (Najwa and Hassen) with the accused."
