Cop injured during protests

Johannesburg - A policewoman was injured during protests at the Kwa Thema hostel, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.
Captain Johannes Ramphora said the municipality had asked the police to go to the hostel while they disconnected illegal electricity supplies - because they did not want to be attacked by hostel dwellers.
Two weeks ago, four people were electrocuted by the illegal electricity connections.
When police arrived at the hostels on Tuesday, there were between 100 and 200 protesters present - and one hostel dweller fired a shot.
The police decided to withdraw because they felt the situation was "getting violent", said Ramphora.
However, a shop was then looted next to the hostel and so the police returned to the scene.
Two shots were fired at the police, one injuring a policewoman in the head.
Ramphora said the policewoman's condition was not yet known because paramedics were still treating her.
He said police reinforcements from surrounding areas had been called in.
About 500 police were searching the hostel for illegal firearms.
