Pretoria - Armed robbers shot at a woman - who was nearly nine months pregnant - and her husband at about 22:15 on Saturday outside Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital in Sunnyside.
The woman was robbed of her handbag and cellphone.
Balungila and Themba Mashaba, both 29, of Philip Nel Park had gone to the casualty department earlier that night after Balungila had started feeling unwell.
The doctor examined her and she was sent home.
Themba said that they had just climbed into the car in front of the casualty department when someone knocked on his window.
"The man pointed a gun at me and told me to open the window but I refused.
He fired a shot.
"Another one appeared on my wife's side (of the car) and grabbed her handbag from her lap."
"Then they fled."
Themba said that he had called for help but that the guards had not rushed to help him.
"They rather hid when they heard the shots."
"I also cannot understand how the robbers fled past the guards at the gate," he said.
Police spokesperson inspector Job Mashiane said that the robbery and shooting had taken place in the parking lot.
He said that the police were unable to find proof that shots had indeed been fired.
