Johannesburg - A 26-year-old Balfour man - who allegedly raped his eight-year-old niece, while making his nine-year-old son watch - was denied bail after his third court appearance, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.
"The man (whose name cannot be revealed, to protect the identity of the children) was denied bail for the third time in the Balfour Magistrate's Court on Tuesday," said Superintendent Abie Khoabane.
He said while proceedings were taking place, almost 200 school children and woman protested outside the court.
"They demanded that the court deny bail for the accused, and that justice be done ... the protesters dispersed peacefully after proceedings."
Son told to sleep next to niece
The man allegedly raped the girl when her mother (the accused's sister) left their home in Siyathemba township to attend a funeral on April 13. He was meant to look after the girl for the night, Khoabane said.
"The little girl was asleep at the home - which both the accused and his sister shared. He woke the girl up and then took her into his bedroom, and ordered her to take off her clothing.
"The accused then allegedly raped her, before calling his son into the room. He then raped her in front of his son for the second time."
After the second rape, he then ordered his son to sleep next to his niece, and got into bed with the both of them.
All three slept for a while, the man then woke up and raped the girl for the third time, again in front of his son, Khobane said.
The boy was not sexually assaulted.
"The next morning, the man got ready for work, made the children breakfast, and told them not to go to school. After he left, the children immediately reported the incident to a family friend, who alerted police.
"The man was arrested shortly after and made his first and second court appearance on April 14 and 16; he was denied bail on both occasions.
He was due to appear in court on May 8 for a further bail application, police said.
