Protesters hand over memo
23/04/2008 16:32  - (SA)

  • Power protesters gather in city
  • No tariff hike, more power cuts
  • Eskom wants tariffs doubled
  • Johannesburg - About four hundred civil society protesters under the banner of the Anti-Privatisation Forum have handed over a memorandum to City Power and Eskom in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The protesters are demanding the immediate resignation of Eskom managers and a halt to bonuses for their management.

City Power manager Vicky Shaping who received the memorandum on behalf of her organisation said she would give it to the mayor and discuss the demands with him.

Earlier, spokesperson for the forum, Silumko Radebe, condemned the proposed 53% Eskom electricity tariff increase.

"The proposed tariff hike will negatively affect the living standards of poor households and will be at odds with efforts to reduce poverty," Radebe said.
