Two nabbed for smash-grab reign
24/04/2008 07:47 - (SA)
Pretoria - Two men, aged 24 and 27, were arrested on Wednesday in connection with a long spate of smash-and-grab thefts in the Sunnyside and Arcadia areas, said Pretoria police.
Inspector Malose Mashiane said police finally nabbed the pair by posing in civilian clothes on Wednesday morning at the intersection of Nelson Mandela and Schoeman streets.
He said the pair were allegedly responsible for daily smash-and-grabs in the area since mid-2007.
The pair always targeted women because "women like to put their bags on the front seat", said Mashiane.
The pair would then smash the women's car windows when they stopped at a red light.
Want to jail them forever
Mashiane said the men would appear in Pretoria Regional Court on Thursday on charges of theft out of a motor vehicle.
Police have asked anybody who was a victim of a smash-and-grab in the area, especially at the intersections between Nelson Mandela Street and the fountains circle, George Storrar, Schoeman, Church, Proes or Pretorius streets to come forward to identify the men.
"We want to take them to jail forever."
Any victims should contact the Sunnyside police on 012 422 3655 or 3654.
Mashiane said police also were appealing to people to keep valuables in the boot and not in the visible part of their vehicles.
