Durban - An underground electricity cable exploded near a railway line in Durban's Chatsworth suburb on Thursday, the eThekwini Fire department said.
Divisional commander Owen Singh said the incident took place in Westcliff, Chatsworth shortly after 08:00.
"An underground cable exploded alongside a railway line, but there were no injuries," he said, stressing that it was a minor explosion.
"The incident happened during load shedding," said Singh.
Firemen were still standing by at the scene, waiting for electricity department officials to check the cables to see whether the area was safe.
"There is no fire there presently, but firemen are monitoring the area," he said.
The explosion was reported to authorities after residents heard a loud "bang" and began to panic.
It is unclear what caused the explosion.
