Commuters stage violent protest
25/04/2008 11:40 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Six people were arrested during violent protests by hundreds of angry commuters at the Daveyton train station on the East Rand on Friday, Johannesburg police said.
"The commuters are complaining that there are constant delays from Northmead to Daveyton station; they are also demanding that we release the arrested people," said Inspector Nakedi Rapholo.
She said despite a heavy police presence, the commuters were still pelting taxis with stones and toy-toying.
Earlier, the protesting commuters torched Metrorail's ticket offices at the station.
"Computers, money and tickets were destroyed during the office fire. The cashiers who were in the offices managed to run away. No one was injured and the fire has been extinguished."
The offices were set alight with matches and paper, Nakedi said.
"The situation is tense at the moment, but police are trying to control it.
A representative for the commuters and Metrorail were currently negotiating."
She said that trains could not move through Daveyton station, due to a risk of the protesters setting them alight.
