Johannesburg - Three men appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Friday after they allegedly blew up an ATM, police said.
Maphuti Enerst Matlou, 32, Josaya Motaung, 31, and Barney Mahlangu, 26, were charged with theft, malicious damage to property and attempted murder following an incident at an ATM on Wednesday.
"Police were informed of the blast in Phagameng township; as they were searching for suspects they saw a suspicious vehicle on the R101," said Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba.
He said police pursued the car and the occupants opened fire and a shootout ensued.
"The same vehicle was later found abandoned in Mokgopong containing an undisclosed amount of money, explosives and documents. The three were arrested later the same day after a massive search."
They were remanded in custody and the matter was postponed to May 6 for bail application, said Ledwaba.
