Bloemfontein - A Free State man was sentenced in the Harrismith Regional Court on Tuesday to life imprisonment for the rape of two girls in his care, said police.
Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said the 33-year-old man of Ezenzeleni at Warden was sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of the girls, aged seven and nine, in 2007.
Mophiring said the man, an uncle of the two victims, was caught in the act when neighbours heard the children crying in a shack.
"They peeped through the holes of the shack and saw the man raping the girls.
Girls left in his care
"They saw a police vehicle which was patrolling the area and they stopped it and directed them to the shack," said Mophiring.
The rapes happened while the man's wife and sister, the two children's mother, were at a local hospital attending to another child who had drunk paraffin.
They left him in care of the two girls.
Mophiring said the two children were placed in the Hobhouse Children's Home in Harrismith after the incident and are still staying at the home.
