Johannesburg - A 12-year-old boy was shot and wounded during an exchange of gunfire between police and hijackers in Alexandra on Tuesday, said police.

Inspector Moses Maphakela said two men hijacked a Hyundai Getz in Bramley about 15:00.

"The vehicle was spotted in Alexandra township and police chased the vehicle.

"The two hijackers got out of the car and started shooting at the police. Police returned fire and a 12-year-old boy walking on the side of the road at the time was shot," he said.

According to police, the boy was in a stable condition in hospital.

Police were investigating a case of car hijacking in Bramley and a case or attempted murder and possession of a stolen vehicle in Alexandra.
