Chimp travels to ICU in style

Johannesburg - An 18-month-old chimpanzee was taken from the Netcare Milpark Hospital to a veterinary clinic after a serious head injury, said Johannesburg paramedics on Wednesday.
Netcare spokesperson Nick Dollman said an ambulance undertook the unusual ICU transfer from the trauma centre at Netcare Milpark Hospital to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Hospital outside Pretoria.
"It is believed that the chimp, whose name was Joshua, was injured by his older peers," said Dollman.
According to paramedics, zoo officials delivered the injured animal to the hospital on Wednesday and X-rays revealed the serious head injury.
"Medication was administered and the chimp, which was placed on life-support machinery, was transported in the ambulance under the watchful eye of the Netcare 911 paramedic, hospital trauma sister and a vet from the zoo," said Dollman.
According to paramedics Joshua was still in a critical condition.
The equipment and ambulance were thoroughly sterilised before being prepared for transporting sick and injured people, he said.
