  • Johannesburg - One man was arrested after an ATM bombing in Zwide early on Thursday morning, said Eastern Cape police.

Police spokesperson Inspector Dumile Gwavu said Kwazakele police were patrolling Koyana road just after 04:00 when they received information that an ATM had been bombed.

When they arrived at the scene they saw four men carrying bags and taking out money from the ATM.

    "The machine was totally damaged."

The men ran to a white Ford Telstar parked nearby where a driver was waiting for them.

A shoot-out between police and the robbers occurred and a 21-year old man was injured and arrested.

The others managed to flee in the getaway car and drove in the direction of Soweto-on-Sea.

The arrested man is in hospital under police guard.

Police have opened up a case of malicious damage to property and attempted murder.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Kwazakele police at 041-401-9103/35.
