Johannesburg - A man died after a car chase with police in Erasmia near Hartbeespoort, Johannesburg police said on Friday.
Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufamadi said the car chase ensued after security guards tipped off police after seeing two cars that raised their suspicions arrive at a mall in Erasmia at around 02:00.
"Security guards spotted two suspicious cars; a BMW with four men inside and a Daewoo, and [they] called police. When police arrived they started to shoot at them," he said.
Both cars sped off and were chased by police to the corner of the M26 and R511 near Hartbeespoort where they were found to have crashed, he said.
"Both those cars had crashed and there was an unknown man lying dead next to them. It is unconfirmed if the man was one of the suspects but it is [likely]," said Mufamadi.
Police found a pistol and a revolver at the accident scene.
The dead man had been taken to a state mortuary.
